Welcome to the

Safe & Warm

Exhausted by the struggle of hatching, the chick must rest. During this time, it will digest the final bit of the egg yolk it was living on while inside the shell - this will take another several hours.

His mother will not attempt to feed him until he begs - perhaps she knows that feeding too soon causes a poisonous interaction with the yolk still in his system.

He will not beg until it is gone, so this way she will know when it is safe to feed. In the meantime, both parents co-operate to keep him warm and safe.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
