Grasshopper in Song

This is Grasshopper, one of last year's Cam babies, at the top of the playpen, in full song - see how his throat is distended? This is a typical posture for a songster - it helps make the sound of his song carry further, and allows him to modulate the tones produced by his double syrinx. In effect, the canary has two voice boxes, and so can harmonize with himself!

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
