Welcome to the

Self-Serve

Peanut returns frequently to the wire rack near her nest which holds the nesting material. Using something like this rack works very well, and the hens seem to enjoy it - it seems they like having to pull the nesting material free. Perhaps it makes them feel more like they are 'harvesting' their own nesting material?

Whatever the reason, being able to pull and tug at the fibres seems to satisfy a basic instinct for them. (Some people use these racks to serve greens outside of breeding season.)

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
