Empty Nest

Shortly before 8 am on the youngster's twenty-first day, the chicks abandoned the nest again.

This time they did not return. The nest stood empty for the rest of the day, and that night everybody slept on the perches.

Early the next morning, I took the old nest down, to give Peanut a bit of an enforced break before her second clutch of the season. Is there anything lonlier-looking than an empty, used-and-abandoned nest?

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
