Hatching!

May 6, 2000; Dolly's first egg has hatched on the thirteenth day of incubation.   Fourteen days is more common, but a dedicated hen can pull it off, as Dolly has done!

This tiny scrap of life must have hatched during the night, as when dawn comes it is alert and hungry. As soon as it is light enough, Dolly was off the nest calling for food - she barely waited for me to set the plate down to dig in!

At this point, the chick is not even as big as the egg it hatched from, but that will change quickly, as canary chicks can double their weight or more daily for the first ten days or so of their life.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
