Dan keeps Dolly happy and on the eggs by reinforcing the bond between them at every chance. He accomplishes this by the simple expedient of feeding her as much as she wants, whenever she wants.
This assures her that he will be a reliable and dependable father to her chicks... and since he has continued to feed her throughout the incubation, she will know it is safe to trust her chicks with him once they have hatched.
Also - Dan has figured out that if he feeds her really well, sometimes Dolly will let him look at the eggs!
