A Male Alario Finch, Serinus alario

This is a male of the species Serinus Alario, or Alario Finch. He is quite easy to tell from the hens of his race, what with his distinctive black head, and beautiful chestnut-coloured back.

Like many of the birds in this group of finches, these birds frequent fairly dry grasslands, with widely scattered trees. They tend to get fat in captivity, so care must be taken to see that they do not get too many oily seeds in their diet, and that adequate room for exercising is provided. Like most grassland birds, these finches enjoy a good amount of greens and soaked seeds, too.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
