These two nicely show the two main feather types of canaries. They are actually almost identical in size and shape, but the style of feather changes their appearance.

      The bird on the left is a non-intensive variegated red canary, also called 'buff red' or 'soft-feathered red', while the bird on the right is an intensive varigated red, also known as 'hard-feathered'. Intensive-feathered birds are sometimes termed 'yellow' regardless of the actual colour - in this context, the word refers to the feather structure, not it's colour. ('Variegated' refers to the dark markings)

      Neither canary is particularly thrilled with having his picture taken.
