The Red-Fronted Serin, Serinus pusillus

This is another gorgeous member of the carduelan finch family, Serinus pusillus, about which I was able to find very little information. Usually known as the Red-Fronted Serin, it is found in Arabia, Armenia, and neighbouring countries, and like most of its relatives, it also is a bird preferring fairly dry open grasslands. It therefor eats a diet fairly similar to other birds native to this kind of habitat.

This species, and most of the other birds shown in this picture series, is sometimes used to produce hybrids with the canary - such hybrids, known as 'mules', are not only beautiful to look at, but are usually great singers, too! A small percentage of the offspring may be fertile.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
