A European Serin Hen, Serinus serinus

Meet a very suspicious hen, of the race Serinus serinus, usually known as the European Serin. She has the photographer in the rather narrow field of her vision which allows her to gauge his exact distance from her, and it is clear she aims to keep him in that view as long as he is nearby.

Her feathering is subtley different from that of the males of her race; her feathers are a little broader than his, and the light-coloured edges to the feathers are wider, giving her both a paler appearance overall, and a slightly more rounded silouette.

Note the clearly defined striations on her flanks; these markings are often dimmer, or may even be completely absent, in the males of her species.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
