This is a breeding pair of the species Serinus syriacus, often called the Syrian Canary, or the Syrian Serin. Although they are similar in appearance, each gender has its own distinct points, visible if you look closely. The hen of this pair is the bird on the left; noteable differences include the greater amount of yellow which shows in the male's feathers overall, giving the hen a paler appearance. This is especially apparent in the face. Also, the feathering in the area around her vent is much paler than the male's, being almost white. The Syrian Canary is found mostly in - you guessed it - Syria and neighbouring countries, preferring, as do most of the birds in this group, relatively dry and open grasslands, lightly sprinkled with a few trees. |
